The Gallery

Newlyn Art Gallery is one of the South West's leading contemporary art organisations and has developed a national and international reputation for exhibitions highlighting the diversity of current practice. As an educational charity they promote and encourage greater understanding and enjoyment of the exhibitions on show.

The Gallery originates touring exhibitions and works collaboratively with art organisations such as St. Ives International, Tate St. Ives and others both nationally and internationally.

Newlyn Art Gallery was established in 1895 for the exhibition of work from the Newlyn School Artists. Today the Newlyn Society of Artists, which grew out of the Newlyn School, continues to show three times each year, profiling the quality and rich variety of work made locally. Early Newlyn School paintings are on exhibition at Penlee House Gallery and Museum, Penzance.

Funding

The Gallery is an educational charity funded by South West Arts, with grants from Cornwall County Council and Penwith District Council. In the current year they have received additional funding from the Arts Council of England and the Elephant Trust.

Education and Events

Education is an integral part of the Gallery's activities and closely linked to the exhibition programme. The education programme explores ways of interpreting contemporary art exhibitions through projects devised to cater for as wide an audience as possible.

Covering a range of subjects, the Gallery organises projects both in-house and outreach to meet Attainment Targets set in the National Curriculum for both primary and secondary education. The Gallery aims to extend and enrich the experience of pupils by developing visual literacy, language and practical skills through the experience of contemporary art. For further information, contact Esen Kaya, Education Officer at the Gallery.

Tate Gallery St. Ives opened in June 1993 and offers a unique introduction to modern art, where many works can be viewed in the surroundings and atmosphere which inspired them. In 1928 the meeting of Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood began the development of St. Ives as an artists' colony. With the outbreak of war in 1939, Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Naum Gabo settled in St. Ives, establishing in West Cornwall an outpost for the abstract avant-garde. After the war a younger generation of artists emerged, including Peter Lanyon, John Wells, Roger Hilton, Bryan Wynter, Patrick Heron, Terry Frost and Wihlemina Barns-Graham.

The establishment of the Tate Gallery St. Ives has stimulated another stage of evolution in the visual arts of the region. The ceramic tradition which Bernard Leach established with Shoji Hamada in 1920 adds a further dimension to St. Ives' international reputation.

Annual Displays

Tate Gallery St. Ives presents changing displays of twentieth-century art in the context of Cornwall, focusing on the modern tradition for which St. Ives has become famous. Displays are drawn from the Tate Gallery Collection of British and modern art and are changed annually in order to bring fresh works relevant to St. Ives. The displays are complemented by a series of exhibitions and artist's projects.

The new displays, opening on 14 November, will focus on the significant role of three art institutions, Dartington Hall in Devon, Bath Academy of Art at Corsham and Leeds University, in the lives of artists mainly associated with St. Ives. From the 1930s to the 1950s, these three centres played an important part in the development of modernism in Britain and made a unique contribution to art education. These displays will be divided into two parts: the first part will consist of an exhibition of loans from Dartington Hall Collection, including works by Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada, Cecil Collins and Mark Tobey; in the second part paintings by William Scott, Peter Lanyon, Bryan Wynter, Peter Potworowski, Terry Frost and Trevor Bell, made while they were teaching at Corsham and Leeds, will be shown.

Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden

Barbara Hepworth's studio and garden have been run by the Tate Gallery since 1980, and are now an integral part of Tate Gallery St. Ives. Hepworth, who died in 1975, asked in her will that Trewyn Studios and the adjacent garden, with a group of her sculptures placed as she wished, be permanently open to the public. Visiting the Museum and Garden is a unique experience, which gives remarkable insight into the work and outlook of one of Britain's most important twentieth-century artists.

Booking Group Visits

Tate Gallery St. Ives welcomes pre-booked groups of ten or more visitors. All visits are tailored to suit the specific requirements and special areas of interest of individual groups.

Due to the huge demand for educational activities, and the special character and nature of the Gallery and Hepworth Museum it is necessary to restrict the number of group visits. it is therefore essential to book your visit at least three weeks in advance.

Education Friends and Inset Sessions for Teachers

The Gallery organises INSET sessions on request on an individual or whole school basis. Sessions range from two hours to a whole day and are tailored to meet the specific needs of the group. The aim is to suggest approaches and strategies for using the Gallery displays and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Garden as an education resource. Tate staff can discuss the content of the session on booking and are able to suggest possible themes such as a general introduction to the work of St. Ives artists through to Looking at Modern Art or Sculpture as well as more specific themes linked to special exhibitions or artists projects.

Education Friends is a popular scheme for schools and colleges which ensures they are sent information and gain free admission for pre-booked sessions.
