Camel River - Wadebridge to Padstow

Great changes have taken place as the Camel River enters the town of Wadebridge, it becomes an estuary. One old port gives way to the working port of Padstow. History is all around in casual corners and walks which occasionally spur off from the trail.

You can sit and watch the daily changes taking place in the river which downstream from Wadebridge becomes an estuary.

Mullet and bass, salmon and sea trout will be coming upriver with the tide.

The Camel broadens and you cannot cross it safely without a boat or good skills. Maybe there really are quicksands in parts.

This river is changing from maturity to old age.

Full of influences from many directions, it has an all encompassing power, but, soon the river will die.

The Camel River was born at Slaughter Bridge and it dies as it crosses the Doom Bar and becomes part of the Atlantic Ocean.

Each year the salmon return home to breed again and rejuvenate the life of the river. The death of this ageing river, on the Doom Bar represents the continuity of life.
