28th May update
Some Bank Holiday that was in traditional British fashion we had everything, thunder - lightening - torrential rain - and then glorious warm sunshine not necessarily in that order and it certainly was very localised. Subsequently we are left with a very wet Trail in both directions and also a very unpredictable weather forecast.
Works in progress or planned - Shoreline Padstow end of the Trail it looks like extra bike parking is being constructed - I will confirm when I know more. At long last Toilets are planned for the entrance to the Trail at Wadebridge. Finally Geological stability [ shoring up ] work is due to start at Ball Hill - Padstow end where the fencing is. With all this rain the margins are growing at a rapid rate so I am hoping a mower will go down shortly [ as in dreckly ] I will again advise when I know more. In the meantime don't forget your waterproofs.
Coming soon we hope.
Some like it wet!
New parking space?
16th May update
I saw the biggest Dog Otter scurry across the Trail this morning - but not quick enough with the camera!
15th May update
The fourteen days of dry hot and sunny weather came to an abrupt halt last night. I was out at Riverside bank strimming for the Wadebridge Anglers so the thunder and lightening was a little exciting at time!
Unfortunately we had a deluge of rain which has been continuous even as I type. Subsequently the Trail is saturated - the upside is it is still warm and if you venture out on your bike the Trail will be pretty much yours. So who knows what you might see .. roe deer, foxes and otters have all been spotted upriver recently.
The rain will put the Camel in spate so look out for fish on the move. Hopefully the predicted sunshine and showers forecast for the weekend will lead into better weather again. In the meantime waterproofs are the order of the day.
A week ago last Tuesday I was extracting hailstones from my ears and we just had torrential rain - now we have glorious weather and promise of more to come.
Subsequently the trail both ways is in tip top condition and not a puddle in sight. Everywhere you look the trail is simply bursting with life - the trees and bushes have exploded into a whole spectrum of greens and even as the Gorse, Primroses and Blackthorn fade away we now have a "purple phase" consisting of Campion, Pyramid Orchids and Padstow Pride [ Valerian ] - if you look closely you will also spot violets as well.
The two "Must Do" things in May for me are Padstow Mayday and a trip up to to Gaff and Undertown Woods for a picnic. In amongst the Bluebells the scent is second to none and the aroma of wild Garlic is something else. Moving on upriver to the top section - Bodmin up to Wenford - there has been an enormous amount of work done this Winter. This increasingly popular section improves by the minute. Thinning out by the forestry and resurfacing work from East Wood upwards has made a significant difference so we have even better views and riding conditions.
It is not just baby rabbit time, the pair of swans nesting below the town bridge have new signets and these together with several Mallard broods darting all over the place provide the challenge of the day to count how many little ones there are.
I do hope you can make time for a Camel Trail experience - the sights, sounds and smells are a bit special.
A real spate of April showers, heavy at times, has left the Trail surface puddle strewn. Padstow all ready for May Day - flags and Maypole all in place - forecast is for sunshine and showers but hopefully warmer.
The Camel Trail Tea Garden is now licensed so you can have a glass of wine with your pasty - all very civilized!
CUSTOMER RECOMMENDATION OF THE WEEK
Party of girls on a Hen outing took tandem bikes up to the award winning Camel Trail Vineyard and chilled out on the terracing overlooking the valley and had a wonderful day.
