A Ride with Nige

Nigel (Nige) Wiggett, proprietor of Bridge Bike Hire in Wadebridge, regularly rides along the Camel Trail and writes about what he sees and hears around him. His personal report, supported by many stunning photographs, provides a colourful window into life and conditions along the Trail.

Nigel hasn't updated the April 2010 report but you can read his 2008 report here.

Frogspawn in my pond - the Trail all patched up in both directions - first showing of Primroses with a scattering of Daffodils - birds singing - baby rabbits skipping about - early mornings back on the bike - HAPPY DAYS.

Spring at last, perfect timing with Easter looming up. The weather forecast still looks a little suspect with cold winds and showers this week I understand but I don't care. The Trail both ways is bursting with life, surfaces are good but still damp and occasionally sticky where there has been sections resurfaced namely the Old Town Cove area.

Daffodils wave, the Estuary widens.
Music coming from the Camel River, through the trees.
Primroses .. Spring for sure.

It is just great to catch up with the "Early Morning Club" [ dog walkers, walkers and guys with early shifts riding to work ]: tales of a Dog Otter seen under the Iron Bridge - a Badger swimming at Pentreath Point - a Red Deer just below the first cutting, just a sample of the news exchanged. Oh and of course the Toilets are finally open - what a relief!

So like I said, happy days. Just one note of caution - please, if you are planning a Bike ride over the Easter break, do book ahead - we do look forward to seeing old friends and introducing new clients to the Camel Trail and we really do not want to disappoint anyone.

Check out the weather through our webcam looking down the Trail from our Hireshop.

11th March, 2010

How cold is that? If you think daytime temperatures are not good, pre-dawn is just raw, however, with all the high pressure we have for the first time this year a dry Trail which is great. Spring is obviously very much on hold with the exception of a few brave snowdrops and even the Rabbits are keeping their heads down so no signs of any little ones yet.

On the works front there has been a good deal of cutting back of the margins this Winter and please be aware or some experimental resurfacing going on between Ball Cutting and Pinkson Creek - this involves a good deal of machinery including a scarifier so please take care. Unfortunately no news as to when the new Toilet block will come into service but as soon as I find out you will be the first to know.

Back at the Hireshop it is full on preparation for Easter - basically if it stands still paint it. We are looking forward to seeing old friends and greeting new - hopefully in the sunshine.

  • In the old days you could tell how wealthy a village community was by the height of the Church Tower [St Mabyn is the third highest in Cornwall].
