A Ride with Nige

Nigel (Nige) Wiggett, proprietor of Bridge Bike Hire in Wadebridge, regularly rides along the Camel Trail and writes about what he sees and hears around him. His personal report, supported by many stunning photographs, provides a colourful window into life and conditions along the Trail.

1st March, 2009

I have said before how privileged we are to have the Camel Trail on our doorstep - it has been an amazing Winter for me, I have seen a Red Deer just below the first cutting - loads of Roe Deer in the Gaff and Undertown region - a family of Otters down at the Quarry - a Fox Cub Trailside up at the Vineyard - a Badger at the Quarry, the list is endless and now Spring is putting in an appearance it could not be better.

In some sections I see lots of work is taking place.

Some major work to be done
Good progress, nice new surfaces
Flat out preparing for a great Easter

After a couple of weeks of relatively dry weather the surface both ways is almost puddle free though I have to say the condition of the Trail after last "Summer" leaves a lot to be desired. The Council are well aware of this and I have a list of works that they are in the process of carrying out at present.

Resurfacing has been completed at Ball Cutting - the section of Trail undermined by the River up at Tresarrett is being repaired right now and I know that work to fill in and pack down all the potholes is also underway. If you combine all the works, cutting back, strimming and hedging that have taken place off season you cannot ask for more.

Upriver works Glassy Views Glassy waters

It is a delight to ride the Trail at the moment - I think the way old fertilizer bags are used as "body warmers" for baby lambs is charming and to be honest in all the years I have travelled the Trail I have never experienced the Camel River and Estuary so glassy there is always a ripple on the water even at 5.30am but not this week the reflections and photo opportunities came thick and fast.

Lovely morning down the trail first thing - looks like the last of the milder weather for now as we are about to get an icy blast!

15th March, 2009 - Update

I have received an update from the camel Trail Partnership regarding works at Tresarrett: more problems than originally anticipated so works will now be ongoing to Monday 6th of April. The Coast and Countryside Services Manager appreciates that Easter is an issue and hopes to have "some form of corridor in place for trail users" - notices at key points will warn users of the disruption.

Other news: the gateway building incorporating the new block of toilets will start Easter for approx 20 weeks. Site work will be on Lidls land so that there is not a pinch point at the Trail entrance. Further patching and repair is continuing at a pace during this spell of fine weather.

Anyone who knows these reports knows that I take off for a fair bit of the Winter so it was lovely to return to a load of emails saying that they missed the reports and thanks also to those who pointed out the webcam was down - it should be OK now.

Safe cycling - Nigel
